True Colors

Remember the Cyndi Lauper song? Or the cover by Phil Collins? Or even more recently, by Artists Against Bullying [Hedley, Simple Plan, Kardinal Offishall, Lights, Alyssa Reid, Fefe Dobson & Walk Off the Earth]? Here’s the video in case you have no idea what I’m talking about.

I really love this song. The lyrics that especially speak to me are these:

So don’t be afraid to let them show your true colors
Your true colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow

and

You should never be afraid because your difference is the difference
We live in a time where to be yourself is hard
And the way you really feel can leave you emotionally scarred
But stay strong, stand firm and never back down
Being yourself is the only way to act that

This painting was very much so inspired by this song. I first painted it like you see in the pictures above, but then had three people see it and ask “What’s it going to be?”

Okay… maybe I’ll try again.

So I started reworking it.

I added some details to the face

Then reworked the body several times. Had quite a bit of trouble with this part
Then reworked the body several times. Had quite a bit of trouble with that part, as you can see on the left.

 Eventually finished with this painting.

I love the message in this song because it tells us to just be ourselves. That’s something that I find much easier said than done. I’ve definitely come a long way compared to a few years ago, but still have lots of room to grow.

I’ve mentioned on here before how I used to be ashamed of my love for painting and arts/crafts because I didn’t think it was ‘cool’ so I hid it from most people. I’m mighty glad to say that 90% of the time, that is no longer the case. Starting this blog was a HUGE step in the right direction.

There are still many areas in my life where I find myself having to use a lot of self talk and convince myself to simply ‘be me’. As is. Because I am good enough. In fact, I’m pretty awesome.

This is probably the best lesson I’ve learned from past relationships. There is no point in being the person you think the other person wants you to be. Eventually, your true colors will come through.

I’ve definitely pretended to be someone I’m not in order to feel accepted by someone else. I learned the hard way that this doesn’t result in long term happiness for either party.

Fortunately, there is someone who thinks you are amazing just the way you are. True story. Just be you. I’m trying to do that too. I personally find nothing more attractive than someone who is authentic to themselves, even if it makes them vulnerable.

I hope this song and this painting both remind you that you are perfect just the way you are. Be true to you. Always.

With that, I leave you with a shameless picture of myself with this painting.
