I hope you all had a Happy Canada Day yesterday!!
I may be biased, but I’m fairly certain that I live in Canada’s most beautiful city, which also happens to be our capital. I moved here just under 4 year ago for school, and initially thought I would be getting the hell out the second I was done school. Winter here is COLD and I don’t do well with cold. But then summer happened, and I fell hard for this city. My reasons why Ottawa is the best city:
1. The Rideau Canal
In the summer, you can bike along it for miles. In the winter, you can skate on it, right up to a BeaverTail booth. Year round, it breaks up the downtown and makes for beautiful views and beautiful sunsets.
Just look at the pictures above. The downtown skyline is stunning. The Parliament building, the Chateau Laurier and the Royal Canadian Mint all resemble castles and are conveniently located right downtown. It gives the city a very European feel. The view never gets old.
3. Sunday Bikedays!
I love biking. It’s my preferred way to get around so any city that caters to that gets an A+ in my books. Ottawa has hundreds of miles of paved bike trails so you can get basically anywhere without biking on the roads. I can even bike to work (in Kanata) from my place, which is about 30 km away, almost entirely on these paved trails. And if that’s not awesome enough, on Sundays, the city closes down a bunch of roads to cars so that cyclists can take over. A+ Ottawa. A freakin plus.
If you’re a fan of brunch, and I know that you are, then Ottawa is a great place for you. Some of my favorites include Lieutenant’s Pump, and the Manx. I end up at Lieutenant’s Pump most Sundays and I still look forward to it every week. You need to go. You’ll get chocolate 🙂
5. Proximity to Quebec
I love that Quebec is a part of Canada and it breaks my heart anytime they get close to separating. Quebec is wonderful. First of all, right over the bridge from Ottawa is Gatineau Park which is a gem of it’s own…. beach, biking, hiking, skiing and the list goes on. They also have Costco that sells beer for a fraction of the price as in Ontario. They also speak French which I think is the sexiest language. Quebec, please remain a part of Canada because you rock.
It’s no wonder I’m constantly inspired to paint Ottawa-esque things. This city is full of inspiration. So my newest painting is appropriately of the Rideau Canal at night. Here is the step-by-step progression of it (please pardon the glare in some of the pictures…):
I hope you all had a wonderful Canada Day.
For anyone who lives in or has been to Ottawa, anything you can add to the list of why Ottawa rocks?
